Rider 77 in the Circuit

A US Navy P-8 Poseidon ‘169544’ forming part of the VP-9 Golden Eagles patrol squadron performed 1 touch and go at LMML late yesterday afternoon. The squadron was established in 1951 and is currently operating out of NAS Sigonella. Following its deployment, it will return back to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, its home base in the US.

Throughout its history, prior to the P-8, the squadron first flew with the P4Y-2 Privateer, followed by the P-2V Neptune, and three versions of the P-3 Orion (P-3A, P-3B & P-3C). VP-9 started its transition from the P-3 Orion to the P-8 Poseidon in November 2017, and is thus the fourth aircraft that the patrol squadron has been operating since 1951.
